VDOT Announces I-66 HOT Toll Lanes Outside Capital Beltway

The Virginia Dept. of Transportation could open new High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes on I-66 outside the Beltway as soon as 2020.

High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes featuring “dynamic tolling” are coming to I-66 outside the Capital Beltway in an effort to solve congestion, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The announcement came at a recent summit of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance (NVTA) in McLean.

The tolls will likely feature “ dynamic tolling,” which changes the amount charged based on traffic conditions, WTOP reports.

VDOT officials will seek approval for the toll lanes in 2015 and will begin construction as soon as 2017 with a projected completion in 2020.

The lanes will be funded from a combination of public and private funding as well as toll revenue.
