Manassas Park Residents Keep Calm and Clean Up After Storm

Friday's storms had some areas of Manassas Park looking like the Midwest's Tornado Alley, but residents had the keep calm and clean up mentality after the skies cleared.

Daniel "DJ" Posey spent some of his weekend cutting up the toppled tree in his front yard.

The fallen tree did in part of his fence and almost took out the power line that runs parallel to the street in front of his Manassas Park home. 

He's not worried though.

If he does the work himself, it'll cost him around $100, Posey estimated Sunday afternoon.

His brother-in-law works for an equiptment rental company, he said. They have plans to chop up some of the tree and make mulch.

"I'll have firewood for the next two years," Posey said, smiling. 

He certainly sees the silver lining in the cloud.

All in all, he feels fortunate,

The lights flickered a bit—compliments of his tree landing on the power line, most likely—but nothing major, Posey said. 

Just down the road a bit is Mark Alkire.

His lawn is prestine and

He remembers Friday night clearly.

"It sounded like a tornado," Alkire said.

Blocks away, the Manassas Park Community Center is still in the dark after losing power Friday night.

It's closed to recreation, but staff were there throughout the weekend just in case anybody came by to use the building for its other purpose—a

Sunday afternoon, no one came by to cool off, said a staff member who greeted this reporter at the door.

Oh, a few walkers floated in on Saturday and cooled off for 15 minutes before moving on, but no one came to stay, he said. 

Patrons have been using their membership at in Manassas Park as a sort of cooling center lately, said Eric Beamer Anytime Fitness member advisor. 

"People who normally run outside, come in here to do it because it's so hot," Beamer said Sunday.

The stormy weather apparently didn't stop folks from getting their work out on, either. 

It's been steady, Beamer added.
