Calls Asking for Money for the McLean Volunteer Fire Department Are Fake

Fraudulent Telemarketing Scheme Targets McLean Residents

Steve Arner, president of the McLean Volunteer Fire Department, sent this note and asked McLean Patch to share it with the neighbors.

McLean residents have been targeted by a telemarketing fraud. Area residents have reported receiving calls soliciting funds purportedly in support of the McLean Volunteer Fire Department (“MVFD”).

MVFD does not, has not, and will not solicit funds over the phone. MVFD solicits donations through the mail, typically in the fall prior to its annual Open House, and accepts donations through its website.

The volunteer fire department is still raising money to buy a new fire engine. However that appeal will only come in the mail in the fall to McLean residents, Arner said.

MVFD learned of the scam when an area resident called to complain that a telemarketer reportedly working on the Department’s behalf had been rude. Recipients of such calls are urged to obtain as much information about the caller as possible, and provide it to MVFD.
