The Latin name for the daffodil is narcissus. Narcissus are also referred to as jonquils in North America, Telefora says.
Few garden plants give as much pleasure with as little effort as daffodils, according to the University of Missouri Extension Service. They are one of the most vigorous and colorful flowers of spring. With good drainage they thrive in most soils, although they prefer a medium-heavy loam, according to the Extension Servce.
