DoD: McLean Teen Hopes to Raise $310K to Honor Navy SEALs

Will Thomas, 13, of McLean, is using basketball to help the families of fallen troops, the Defense Department reports.

McLean resident Will Thomas isn't your typical 13-year-old.

Last year, McLean Patch brought you and to help those soldiers' families.

"Inspired and touched by the memories of the 17 Navy SEALs killed in an Aug. 6 helicopter attack and crash in Afghanistan, Will asked the McLean community to rally behind him as he attempted to shoot 17,000 baskets in his driveway.

Dubbed 'Operation Hawkeye,' after a fallen SEAL's faithful Labrador retriever, Will’s mission raised money for the Navy SEAL Foundation — an organization that provides immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families.

He managed to raised tens of thousands of dollars in 2011 and this year, he's setting his sights even higher.

The Defense Department reported this week that Will has set is 2012 fundraising goal at $310,000. According to Operation Hawkeye's Facebook page, the Rise and Fire 2012 (Basketball) Shooting Challenge is scheduled for Labor Day weekend.
