MCLEAN, VA — A group of local parents is holding a fundraising campaign to turn the aging playground at McLean Central Park into a modern space for children of all ages to enjoy.

The fundraising campaign for the playground renovations is halfway toward its $400,000 fundraising goal.

The volunteer team of local moms coordinating the fundraising campaign, called the McLean Central Park Playground Team, is partnering with more than 25 local organizations to support the playground upgrades.

Other fundraising events in the works include a July 29 Bootcamp class with Trireme Fitness, which will be for people who donate money to the playground renovation, and a fun-filled day at Shipgarten’s family festival in August.

“It is so encouraging how many businesses and community members have supported our cause,” Lacey Obry, a playground team member and mother of three, said in a statement. “But we still have a ways to go — only have five more months to raise the remaining $200,000. We need the community to continue supporting the playground and help get us across the finish line.”

McLean Central Park, a 28-acre public park in downtown McLean, will be undergoing a major renovation, including an outdoor amphitheater, resurfaced courts, and a new adult fitness area.

Fairfax County has been allocated enough funding only to cover 41 percent of the cost of the new combined playground concept. That is why the McLean Central Playground Team came together to support the planning and fundraising for the playground renovations, working in partnership with Fairfax County Park Authority and Fairfax County Park Foundation.

Donations are managed by the Fairfax County Park Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization.

So far, a mix of local businesses, families, and corporate sponsors have donated to the campaign. “As a business owner of a dance school in McLean, I believe it’s important to support our community in creating the best environment to raise our children,” said Katherine Horrigan, owner of Dance Academy of Virginia, explaining why she contributed to the playground.

Anyone interested in supporting the renovations can make donations on the foundation's website for the McLean Central Park Playground.
