Fairfax at Work: $43B in Employee Payroll, Plus More New Data on Employers in the County
New U.S. Census numbers focuses on non-government employers doing business in Fairfax County.

FAIRFAX, VA — Employers in Fairfax County pay out $43 billion in annual payroll in the county. Released last week, the new numbers are included in the 2014 Statistics of U.S. Businesses from the U.S. Census.
There were 24,639 employers in the county — the majority of those being small businesses with less than 20 employees.
In total, there were 581,542 employees across the county. The majority of those employees worked for the county's largest employers: 1,300 employers had 500 or more total staff members.

The data includes most employers in the county. It excludes businesses without employees, those working out of private households or government entities.
