Inmate, 53, Dies in Custody Saturday at Fairfax County Jail: Police

Police say the man who died early Saturday was incarcerated at the Adult Detention Center since last September.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- An inmate died early Saturday at the Fairfax County jail, police said Saturday in a news release.

Fairfax County Sheriff's Office personnel called the Department of Public Safety Communications (DPSC) at 6:41 a.m. on Saturday to report that a 53-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell.

Sheriff's deputies immediately initiated CPR, police said. Rescue personnel arrived at 6:45, police personnel arrived at 6:53, according to police.

Extensive efforts to revive the inmate were unsuccessful and the inmate was pronounced dead, police said.

As protocol dictates, Police Department personnel from the Crime Scene Section and detectives from the Major Crimes Division responded to conduct an investigation, police said. The operation of the Adult Detention Center (ADC) is overseen by the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office.

The deceased inmate had been incarcerated at the ADC since Sept. 15, 2015, according to police. He was assigned to a Direct Supervision Unit where inmates are routinely checked every 30 minutes. The Sheriff's Office and the Police Department are working collectively to gather all information and to thoroughly document the situation. Nothing appears suspicious at this time, police said.

The deceased inmate's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

The average daily inmate population in the ADC is 1,050.
