Langley Boys Lacrosse Claim Fourth-Straight State Title

Last night at Westfield High School, the Langley Saxons faced the Chantilly Chargers to determine who would become the 2012 Virginia State Boys Lacrosse champions. Langley has held the state champion title for the past three years and has denied the Chantilly Chargers the state title for two of the past three years.

Under the guidance of long time head coach Earl Brewer, the Langley Saxons were going into the game with three prior state championship titles, however, Langley was missing one of their key defensive players, senior Chandler Sux, who suffered a knee injury with just minutes left in a prior playoff game. It was unknown how well Langley could defend against Chantilly without Sux covering the crease and helping out Langley's top notch goalie, Andrew Spivey.

When Chantilly came out very strong within the first few minutes and scored two goals and then had a 3-0 lead during the first quarter, Langley may have thought their hopes and dreams for another state title was not in the cards for this this year.

However, Langley finally responded and put themselves on the scoreboard and slowly started to close the gap and had the game tied by halftime at 6-6, showing Chantilly that they had come for nothing short of victory..

Brewer must have performed his magic during the halftime break. He clearly gave the team the motivation they needed to come out strong in the second half and show Chantilly what a rear championship team can deliver.

Two minutes into the second half, Langley scored two goals and was up 8-6. Four more minutes went by with no response by either team, then out of nowhere Langley scored twice in under one minute and the Saxons pulled ahead 10-6.

Chantilly finally scored for the first time in the second half with about three minutes left in the third quarter.

Chantilly came out strong again at the beginning of the fourth quarter and scored in the first 90 seconds making the score 10-8, showing Langley that the Chargers had come to win.

Chantilly kept the pressure on as they had time to close the gap, however, with four minutes left in the game, Langley scored and put themselves up by three points again, 11-8, and the Saxons could taste victory only minutes away.

Then, with 40 seconds left in the game, Langley again scored, pulling ahead by four points, bringing the final score to 12-8.

Chantilly came to play and showed their spirit and determination but just were not able to pull ahead of Langley in the 2nd half of the game.
