Langley Student Named Student Representative to Fairfax County School Board

Lucy Gunter, a junior at Langley High School, has been elected by the countywide Student Advisory Council (SAC) to serve a one-year term as student representative to the Fairfax County School Board, beginning July 1.

Gunter will participate in school board meetings as a nonvoting member, filling the position currently held by Eugene Coleman III, a senior at Mount Vernon High School. Gunter will be the 42nd student representative to the School Board.

 “I sincerely want to help this county make decisions that will help us, the students, to succeed,” she said in her application for the position. Two issues she wants to address are the $100 athletic fee, charged per sport for students participating in Virginia High School League (VHSL) sports, and technology training support for teachers, according to the school board announcement.

Gunter has a grade point average of 3.6.  She is president of Langley High’s Best Buddies chapter, where she has served as a peer buddy, and is founder of Otto’s Army, a spirit club, and serves as its president.

She also served as president of her freshman class. Gunter plays field hockey, participates in track and field, is a soccer referee, and has been recognized as a scholar athlete at Langley five times. She serves as a SAC representative, is a member of the National Honor Society and Leadership Honor Society, and is a member of the Prom Committee. Gunter has also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and is a youth mission and service representative at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church.
