McLean Community Center Renovation: Events, Activities to Continue During Construction

McLean Community Center Ingleside renovation scheduled to begin in April 2017; new community-based venues will keep events going.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- In April 2017, work to renovate the McLean Community Center’s (MCC) Ingleside Avenue facility is scheduled to begin, according to the Center. Over the last year, the McLean Community Center Governing Board, with Executive Director George Sachs and architects, The Lukmire Partnership, have been working to finalize the design of the Center’s planned renovation of its Ingleside Avenue facility. The building is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

The approximately $8 million project will add a meeting room adjacent to the current Community Hall and as well as add a 2,983-square-foot structure, with multipurpose room, restrooms and storage space, just south of the center’s Susan B. DuVal Art Studio. The project also entails enhancing the center’s courtyard. This space will offer additional outdoor seating and decorative landscaping that will be open and exposed to the sky.

To ensure the Center’s programs and services will continue uninterrupted, MCC Executive Director George Sachs has worked with Fairfax County’s Facilities Management Department to find and secure rental properties for a 22-month period, beginning as early as March 2017, the Center announced.

“We will relocate and occupy these spaces in March with hopes of moving back to the newly renovated Community Center by the fall of 2018," Sachs said. "We want to continue to meet the needs of the community throughout this period of transition and we feel fortunate to have found locations that will allow us to do just that."

In order to continue to offer a variety of classes, MCC has secured the use of a nearby property. The majority of the Center’s classes will be held at 6645 Old Dominion Dr. (see map below), in the McLean Square Shopping Center.

Currently, the Center offers more than 100 classes each session. The new location includes four classrooms, which will be scheduled for maximum use. The space will also house the Center’s registration office.

During the construction period of the renovation, MCC’s administrative offices will be located in the same shopping center as the new classroom space, at 6631 Old Dominion Dr. (see map below), on the first floor of the Century 21 New Millennium building.

This space will house the executive director, finance, facilities and public information offices of the Center.

The large, outdoor community events produced by the Center also will continue to be offered:

  • The Spring and Fall Community Garage Sales will be held at the parking garage at 1420 Beverly Road
  • McLean Day 2017 will be held at Lewinsville Park
  • 4th of July Fireworks Celebration will return to Churchill Road School for a second year
  • Jammin’ Juniors, the free preschool concerts offered by The Alden, will be held in local parks, while other performances will be presented in community-based venues.

MCC is continuing to identify additional spaces for the dance program, indoor special events and performing arts programs.

The McLean Projects for the Arts, currently located on the second floor of MCC, will be relocating to their temporary location in the Giant Shopping Center. The storefront is located between CVS and Kazan’s Restaurant. Their official address will be 1446 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, VA 22101 (see address below). MCC will continue to handle registration for MPA-sponsored art classes, which will be held at their studio. For more information, call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711.
