Potomac School Welcomes New Staff
Carson Roy will serve as the school's director of admission and financial aid; Timothy Jaeger is the new assistant head of school.
From The Potomac School:
McLean, Va.— Carson Roy has joined The Potomac School as director of admission and financial aid.
Roy will oversee Potomac’s kindergarten through 12th grade admission and financial aid processes, working with his staff to meet with families, conduct interviews and tours, evaluate applications, and, in his words, “help to ensure that enrollment decisions reflect a great fit for the student and the school.”
A day school, Potomac currently enrolls students from 103 zip codes in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Roy says that he is interested in extending the school’s reach into communities that are not currently well represented in its student population. He plans to work closely with feeder schools and add new outreach activities to inspire prospective students and families to visit the campus to learn more about all that The
Potomac School offers.

Roy notes, “I enjoy helping families discover a great school where their children – of any age – can thrive. Potomac is that kind of school. From the first time I visited, I saw what a vibrant and welcoming community this is. Add to that Potomac’s challenging academic program, emphasis on excellent teaching, and beautiful 90-acre campus, and you have something really special here.”
Before joining Potomac, Roy served for five years as director of admission and financial aid at Pomfret School in Connecticut, which enrolls students in grades 9 through 12.

Previously, he was director of middle and upper school admissions at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, a New York City institution that serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
Potomac School Head John Kowalik notes, “Carson’s strong background in independent school admissions and his warm, enthusiastic personality will make him a great leader for our program and an effective ambassador for our school. We are very pleased to have him at Potomac.”
Roy earned his B.A. in history at St. Lawrence University and his M.A. in education leadership at Columbia University Teachers College. He serves on the Admissions Leadership Council of The Enrollment Management Association and the Advisory Council of The Erdmann Institute for Enrollment Leadership.
Also joining The Potomac School staff as assistant head of school is Timothy Jaeger. He is also serving as interim head of Potomac’s Upper School for the 2016-17 school year.
Jaeger’s duties in the Upper School will be a primary focus during his first year as a member of Potomac’s administration. As interim head, he oversees the daily operations of a division that enrolls 459 students in grades 9 through 12, with the goal of providing the best possible educational experience for every student.
Before joining Potomac, Jaeger served for 11 years as assistant head of school at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia – a boarding school for students in grades 9 through 12. He previously held other leadership positions at Episcopal, including six years as the school’s athletic director.
Having worked extensively with high school students, Jaeger is delighted by the opportunity to lead Potomac’s Upper School. He notes, “I enjoy the variety of ways that you can help students through high school, depending on where they are intellectually or developmentally.” He adds, “I believe that the best learning occurs when teachers and students are looking at subject matter and working toward shared goals together, in partnership.”
As assistant head of school, Jaeger is also becoming familiar with the curriculum and operations in Potomac’s Lower, Middle, and Intermediate schools, so that he can help to support a variety of K-12 initiatives. He observes, “The younger students have a terrific energy that is kind of contagious; you can’t walk by a happily-engaged group of third graders without having it affect you in a positive way.”
Potomac Head of School John Kowalik notes, “Tim Jaeger’s professional skills and personal qualities make him a tremendously effective and well-respected leader. I am thrilled that he has joined us at The Potomac School.”
Jaeger holds a B.A. in English from Middlebury College and two master’s degrees – one in sports administration from the University of Massachusetts and a one in private schoo leadership from Columbia University Teachers College.
