President Obama in New Digital Ad for LuAnn Bennett

Bennett is the Democratic challenger in the 10th congressional district race, hoping to oust Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock.

McLEAN, VA -- President Obama is featured in a new digital ad for Democrat LuAnn Bennett, who is hoping to unseat Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock in Virginia's 10th congressional district. If you live in Northern Virginia, you can't escape their TV commercials as the two campaign to win votes. Both are spending millions of dollars on ads in order to win the election on Tuesday.

Comstock was first elected two years ago, after the retirement of longtime Republican Congressman Frank Wolf. The district voted for Obama in 2008; Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won the district in 2012, with 49.9 percent of the vote.

Comstock has walked a tightrope of trying to distance herself from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, calling for him to drop out of the race after a video surfaced of him making lewd comments; but the Bennett campaign has said Comstock didn't do enough to distance herself from Trump before the video came out.

Now, Obama is stepping into the fray just days before the election in the hotly contested race. In the new online ad for Bennett, the President says she is "exactly the change we need." The President highlights what he calls Bennett's values of respect and inclusion, and reminds voters that “our shared values are on the ballot this election.” You can see the ad here:

In a seeming nod to to tie Comstock to what some call the divisive politics of Trump, Obama says: “In Northern Virginia we celebrate America’s diversity. We reject the politics of insults and division. That’s what as stake in this election. Values like respect and inclusion. And those are the values my friend LuAnn Bennett shares. So let’s send LuAnn to Congress.”

Obama continues by describing what LuAnn will bring to Congress, including how her background as a small business owner will help her work across the aisle to move our country forward. “LuAnn is a common sense, compassionate businesswoman who brings people together and gets things done.” The ad closes with Obama saying, “our shared values are on the ballot Northern Virginia, and LuAnn Bennett is exactly the change we need.”

“Northern Virginians deserve a representative that shares their values, someone who will always stand up to hatred and bigotry not just when it's politically expedient,” said Bennett spokesman Robert Howard, in a press release about the ad.

The ad comes on the heels of Barack Obama’s endorsement of LuAnn last week: “I’m proud to endorse LuAnn Bennett for the United States House of Representatives. Over the last eight years, we’ve made tremendous strides towards making our nation safer, stronger, and fairer, but it’s clear that to continue this progress, we need to send more commonsense leaders like LuAnn Bennett to Congress to get things done for the middle class. Bennett will be a champion for Virginia’s families and isn’t afraid to take on the tough fights, like defending a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions, protecting Social Security and Medicare, making sure we keep our sacred promises to our nation’s veterans and their families, and addressing the crushing burden of student loan debt felt by so many Virginian students and families. LuAnn Bennett is the kind of tough and smart leader who will build on all we’ve accomplished and take our nation forward, and that’s why I know the people of Northern Virginia can count on LuAnn Bennett.”

“Barack Obama is an inspirational and transformative leader who has led our country through one of the darkest economic periods of our history and has helped lift up and inspire millions of Americans,” said Bennett. “I am grateful for his steady leadership over these past eight years, and am deeply honored to have his endorsement and support."
