Man In Custody After Hours-Long Standoff Outside CIA Gates: Update

CIA police and the Fairfax County SWAT team arrested a man who made threats outside the CIA headquarters gate Wednesday.

MCLEAN, VA — Authorities have taken into custody an armed man following an hours-long barricade near the CIA headquarters, Fairfax County police confirmed on social media. During the standoff, authorities said the man made threats outside the agency, prompting a heavy police response.

"The barricade incident has been resolved. The suspect surrendered to FCPD negotiators and is in custody," police said shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Police first responded to the area of Georgetown Pike and Dolley Madison Boulevard near CIA headquarters around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police spokesman.

"A person was making threats at the gate of the CIA headquarters Wednesday morning," CIA officials told ABC News.

Fairfax County Police Department told WUSA that authorities responded to a report of an armed man experiencing a mental health crisis on CIA property outside headquarters.

Fairfax Police described the incident as a barricade situation in a post on the department's X, formerly Twitter, account.

Multiple police and fire units from both the Arlington and Fairfax County police and fire departments responded to the scene, according to Fox 5 News. Dolley Madison Blvd was shut down during the incident but has since reopened.

It's unclear what prompted the incident. A CIA spokesperson told Patch that additional details would be “made available as appropriate.”
