Sobriety Checkpoint Planned for This Weekend in Fairfax County

The checkpoint is scheduled for Friday night into Saturday morning.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- Fairfax County Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint this weekend in the Reston Police District. The Reston district is 56 square miles and includes Reston as well as parts of Great Falls, Vienna, Oak Hill and Herndon. Included in the area are Reston Town Center, Lake Fairfax Park, Great Falls National Park, Frying Pan Park, Riverbend County Park.

Police aren't saying where the sobriety checkpoint is taking place, but it will be conducted from 11:15 p.m. and 2:15 a.m. between Friday night and early Saturday morning, according to a police statement.

"Please drive sober and stay safe!" police said.

DUI penalties in Virginia are strict. A first offense is classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor with a mandatory minimum fine of $250, and a minimum of five days in jail if the person's blood alcohol content is over 0.15 -- 10 days if it's over 0.20. Penalties increase significantly after the first offense.
