Spring Hill Rec Center Opens Expanded Parking, Turf Field

More than 200 new parking spaces and a third turf field are now open at Spring Hill Recreation Center completing the second part of a three-part construction project at McLean's recreation center.

The recreation center itself underwent a $1 million facelift last year. The last segment: A new light and new entrance on Spring Hill Road right across from the Spring Hill Elementary School.

Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County Park Authority Board gathered with representatives of McLean Youth Association, and county staff for the formal opening Saturday, according to a county press release.

"Working with McLean Youth Soccer and the Park Authority, we opened the third full size synthetic turf field at Spring Hill," Dranesville Supervisor John Foust said. "The county also added 260 parking spaces, new lighting, sidewalks and landscaping and made significant storm water management improvements at the park. This is the fifth synthetic turf field in McLean and the ninth in the Dranesville District," he said.

The new parking area cost $1.7 million paid for by the county. The field cost $890,000: McLean Youth Soccer contributed $740,000 and a grant program provided $150,000, said the Parks Authority.

The 225-by-360-feet synthetic turf field will accommodate sports such as soccer, football and lacrosse, the Parks Authority said. New bleachers and landscaping were also added.

There are about 40 synthetic turf fields available throughout Fairfax County. With the addition of this field at Spring Hill, the Dranesville district has nine of these fields, according to Dranesville Supervisor John Foust:

• 3 at Spring Hill Rec Center in McLean
• 2 at Herndon High School
• 1 at Linway Terrace Park in McLean
• 1 at Lewinsville Park in McLean
• 1 at Hutchinson Middle School in Herndon
• 1 at Arrowbrook Park in Herndon (recently transferred to the Dranesville District as part of redistricting)
