US Park Police Officer 'Unintentionally' Kills Fellow Officer: Police

An off-duty U.S. Park Police officer unintentionally shot and killed another off-duty officer early Sunday morning in McLean, police said.

MCLEAN, VA — An off-duty U.S. Park Police officer has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after fatally shooting another off-duty U.S. Park Police officer in McLean early Sunday morning, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Detectives from the FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau are investigating the incident, which occurred inside an apartment in the 1700 block of Old Meadow Road. They believe alcohol was a factor in the shooting.

Police received a call around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday that a man had been unintentionally shot inside the apartment.

Jesse Brown Hernandez, 22, a U.S. Park Police officer who lives in McLean, was found dead with a gunshot wound to his upper body, police said.

Detectives determined that Alexander Roy, 25, another U.S. Park Police officer who also lives in McLean, was attempting to dry fire a firearm. Dry firing is when one simulates the discharge of a firearm by pulling the trigger of a firearm that is unloaded.

“Roy unintentionally shot the firearm he believed to be unloaded, fatally striking Hernandez,” Fairfax County police said.

Four people, who knew each other, were in the apartment at the time of the fatal shooting, three of them U.S. Park Police officers, including the victim and the suspect, according to police.

After consulting with the Fairfax County Office of Commonwealth’s Attorney, police charged Roy with involuntary manslaughter. He is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on no bond, according to police.
