Water Rescue, Road Closures Amid Heavy Rain In Fairfax County

With parts of Fairfax County under a flash flood warning or flood warning, there has been flooding and downed trees reported.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — As parts of Fairfax County faced a flood warning or flash flood warning Friday morning, flooding, downed trees and road closures were reported.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to a water rescue at an intersection that frequently sees flooding during heavy rain. A car got stuck at Old Courthouse Road and Besley Road in the Tysons area. The driver self-evacuated with no injuries. The road remains closed.

Another incident involved a downed tree on a home in the 800 block of Dolley Madison Boulevard in McLean. According to the fire department, a medium size tree fell with minimal damage and no injuries. A hazmat team responded due to an oil tank that topped over. The scene is stable, according to the fire department.

Numerous road closures were reported around the county due to flooding or downed trees. As of 1:06 p.m., Fairfax County Police reported the following closures:

  • Fairfax Station Road at Colchester Road, Fairfax Station: one lane closed due to a downed tree (reopened)
  • Beulah Road at Browns Mill Road, Wolf Trap: closed due to flooding
  • Woodburn Road at Spicewood Drive, Annandale: closed due to flooding
  • Arlington Boulevard at Prosperity Avenue, Merrifield: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • 3700 block of Prosperity Avenue, Fairfax: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • 10100 block of Wendover Drive, Vienna: closed due to a downed tree (reopened)
  • Hunter Mill at Hunter Mill Station, Wolf Trap: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • 10500 block of Beach Mill Road, Great Falls: closed due to a downed tree
  • Burke Road at Heritage Square Drive, Burke: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • Burke Lake Road at Kilkenny Lane, Fairfax Station: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • Burke Lake Road at Jerimiah Court, Fairfax Station: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • 10600 block of Hunters Valley Drive, Vienna: closed due to a downed tree and wires in the roadway (reopened)

The fire department urges drivers to avoid driving into flooded roads or through barriers of closed roads.

The flash flood warning continues until 12:15 p.m. Friday in northeastern Fairfax County and 11:45 a.m. in north central Fairfax County. Southeastern Fairfax County is under a flood warning through 1:45 p.m. Friday and central Fairfax County through 1:15 p.m.
