Will Rain Dampen July 4th Celebrations, Fireworks Displays In NoVa?

Heat and storms may return for celebrations and fireworks displays on July 4. Will these put a damper on Independence Day plans?

VIRGINIA — Fireworks fans in Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area may have their Fourth of July plans dampened by showers and thunderstorms, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

While Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be sunny with temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s, clouds are expected to move into the area on Wednesday evening, according to the NWS.

Showers are likely and a thunderstorm is possible between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Independence Day, according to the NWS forecast. Expect a high temperature near 94 degrees and a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Showers and thunderstorms will likely to continue into the evening hours, primarily before 8 p.m., according to NWS. Fireworks fans may want to bring an umbrella or see if their local display has been canceled or postponed.

"After enjoying a refreshing start to the workweek, the Midwest and East Coast can expect a gradual return to muggy summer warmth by Wednesday as surface high pressure reorients itself off the East Coast and ushers in southerly flow," according to NWS.
