MVHS Theatre Review: 'The Velveteen Rabbit'

The drama department kicked off the year with their fall show “The Velveteen Rabbit," a timeless tale written by Phil Grecian that the players have brought to life in their performance of the story.

 “The Velveteen Rabbit” is about a boy named Alex living in the time when the scarlet fever was a big epidemic. To avoid being lonely he uses his imagination to bring his velveteen rabbit to life. When Alex gets the disease, the rabbit tries to help save him and realizes the only way to be a real rabbit is to have a heart and love the boy back.

The Velveteen Rabbit was played by senior Logan Beveridge who has been performing with the players since his freshman year and is hoping to continue his acting in college at Virginia Commonwealth University or James Madison University.

Beveridge had a blast performing in the show and said acting is something he really loves.

“The best part was creating a character completely different from me as a person,” Beveridge said.

Beveridge was accompanied on stage by fellow senior Bryan Azucena who played Alex. Azucena said he enjoyed working with his fellow performers old and new.

“The best part of performing in this show was the fact that we all worked hard and ended up as a family, we became closer,” Azucena said.

“The Velveteen Rabbit” was filled with enthusiastic performers and audience participation, a performance of the Macarena and a classic storyline that shows us love can overpower anything that comes along.
