Neighbors band together to clean up vandalized Norfolk mosque (vpm.org) — Neighbors in Norfolk quickly rallied to repaint Masjid Ash Shura after someone spray-painted black crosses across the mosque’s exterior, while police continue investigating and considering whether it qualifies as a hate crime. Local leaders stress community solidarity, and investigators are asking residents to share tips with the Norfolk Crime Line or through the P3Tips app.
   

2. Norfolk homeless shelter over capacity from cold (wavy.com) — A Norfolk homeless shelter, The Center on Tidewater Drive, is over capacity after the city’s winter overflow warning and urgently needs blankets, hats, gloves, socks, underwear, and thermals. Staff say no one will be turned away, and residents are urged to donate items at the shelter or call Norfolk Police’s non-emergency line if they see someone unhoused in need.
   

3. USS Gravely set to return to Naval Station Norfolk Saturday (13newsnow.com) — A Norfolk-based destroyer, the USS Gravely, is scheduled to return to Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday after a four-month deployment supporting U.S. missions in the Gulf of America and Caribbean. The Arleigh Burke-class ship, carrying about 300 sailors, worked alongside the USS Iwo Jima and USS Gerald R. Ford groups and is named for Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Jr.
   

4. Newport News man gets 40 years for leading major Hampton Roads drug conspiracy (13newsnow.com) — A Newport News man has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for leading a massive marijuana trafficking ring that operated across Hampton Roads, investigated in part by the FBI’s Norfolk office. Authorities say the conspiracy moved huge amounts of cash and drugs through airports, involved dozens of people, and resulted in multimillion-dollar forfeitures and firearms seizures.
   

5. A Paradigm Shift: Navy Establishes First Information Warfare Squadron (soldiersystems.net) — A new Navy Information Warfare Squadron has just been stood up in Norfolk, bringing together cyber, intelligence, and oceanography experts to support carrier strike groups worldwide. Based here as a 48‑month pilot program, IWRON Two is designed to streamline command, sharpen the Navy’s information warfare edge, and could shape how future high‑tech warfighting units are organized across the fleet.
