Seniors Victorious in Close Powder Puff Game

Oakton High vets pull out a 7-0 victory over the junior class

Oakton High's senior girls pulled out a narrow victory against the junior girls in the annual Powder Puff game, which pits the girls against each other in a flag football game—complete with male cheerleaders to support them.

The seniors scored in the first half and held the juniors for the rest of the game, winning 7-0.

"This is my second year coaching this group of girls, so I'm very proud we've won," said Sean Green, who coached the seniors and organized the event.

The seniors lost the Powder Puff game last year and the girls wanted to leave high school having notched a win in the annual event, senior Katherine Baulkwill said.

"I'm very happy. I played last year and we lost, so I just wanted to go out there and win," Baulkwill said. "The juniors put up a good fight, and we're happy they gave us a good one."

The junior and senior girls square off every year as a school spirit activity, with a secondary purpose of raising money for the sophomore, junior and senior classes. The event is typically during homecoming week, but homecoming was the third week of school, which didn't allow for enough time to prepare. Instead, they pushed it back to coincide with the varsity football team's Senior Night, which is Friday.

The funds collected at the door go toward the junior and senior classes, while the concession stand is opened and manned by the sophomore class.

"This is one of our major events to raise money," sophomore Kristi Carrigan said. "The money will go toward prom or things we want to give back to our class or school."

The juniors are looking forward to next year when they can make up for their loss as seniors.

"We definitely played better than them, so we should've won," junior Deana Vasquez said. "I'm playing again next year. The sophomores are too small, so I don't know if they'll be much competition."
