$3 Million Construction of New Restaurant Underway at Former Generous George's Location

New restaurant, owned by Alexandria businessman Jeffrey L. Yates, will go up at 3006 Duke St., former location of Generous Georges.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story mentioned Bishop Ireton parking lots as a possible area for valet parking for the new restaurant; we have removed that information as it doesn't seem to appear in any current planning documents.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- A $3 million construction project for a new restaurant is underway by Alexandria businessman Jeffrey L. Yates, who has begun demolition of the former Generous George's Positive Pizza Place at 3006 Duke St. before construction begins.

The landmark 1940 pink building played host to Generous George's beginning in the 1970s for countless children's pizza parties over the years before it closed in 2009. The building was later purchased by Yates. The project spans four separate lots: 3000, 3006, 3012 and 3012A Duke Street, taking up 192 feet fronting along Duke Street. The combined lot is 16,900 square feet.

Scott-Long Construction of Chantilly has been hired for the project, according to City permits.

There will be renovations made to three floors, as well as the rooftop, including a semi-enclosed roof terrace/bar. Plans call for new kitchens to be located on two levels and bars on three levels.

Plans call for seating for 387 inside and rooftop seating for 61 for a total of 448 seats. The menu would include pizza, pasta, salads and subs. The restaurant is expected to also include take-out and delivery. Owners are proposing live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Here’s more of the description of the plans for the location from previously approved planning documents filed with the City:

The restaurant will be a full-service pizza-pasta restaurant with three levels of dining, two bar areas offering take-out and delivery service. Plans include a rooftop dining and bar area with outdoor terrace seating. Plans also include live music during peak periods with full compliance of all city noise ordinances. Plans include on-site and off-site customer parking and complimentary valet parking on at least two off-site parking lots. A complete remodeling of both the interior and exterior of the building.
