Alexandria Human Resources Director Orr Resigns

Cheryl Orr has accepted a position with Prince William County.

City of Alexandria Human Resources Director Cheryl Orr has resigned to accept an appointment with Prince William County as human resources director.

Her last day with the City of Alexandria is May 11. Assistant City Manager Tom Gates will serve as acting director of human resources while the city conducts a national search to fill the position.

Orr was hired in 2008 and has been responsible for bringing the transition and reorganization of the Personnel Department into a Human Resources Department, development of the department’s first strategic plan, and development of the city’s current diversity plan.

During Orr's tenure, the department utilized new technologies to streamline its processes and procedures, and develop an online employee evaluation system, according to the city. Orr also was responsible for the launching of a new competency-based job classification system, redevelopment and expansion of the city’s training and development program, and development of a new Human Resources customer service unit.
