(Editor's note— Correction: The original story said that Sgt. Seth Weinstein pulled over the driver; Weinstein is investigating the incident.)
An Alexandria man was pulled over by police Thursday after running a red light during a funeral procession. The delay caused him to miss the burial of his great grandmother.
Heather Spinner and her husband were driving in front of her brother-in-law, R.G. Spinner, to the local cemetery June 12 when a police car approached R.G.'s vehicle.
The three removed their yellow funeral procession tags from their rearview mirrors and waved them at the police officer, hoping he would allow them to continue driving. Weinstein said their actions only worsened the situation.
Alexandria police are currently reviewing the red light footage to determine if the officer's actions were justified, according to WTOP. The three were supposed to act as pallbearers at the funeral but arrived after the ceremony ended.
R.G. Spinner has a summons to appear in court Wednesday, June 18. The family has filed a formal complaint with Alexandria Police regarding the handling of the incident.
