Alexandria's Traffic Cameras Catch Thousands of Red-Light Runners

Police Department spokesman calls high number of violations "alarming."

During the first three months of the year, more than 3,200 fines for running red lights have been issued at the city's three camera-monitored intersections.

"I would definitely say that it is very alarming for the number of violations at those three intersections," Jody Donaldson, commander of the Public Information Office with the Alexandria Police Department, told WTOP.

The three monitored intersections are Duke and Walker streets, South Patrick and Franklin streets and South Patrick and Gibbon streets.

The fines, , are $50 each. They have generated about $100,000 in revenue for Alexandria in the first three months of 2012, WTOP reports. Traffic system vendor Redflex take a fee from each ticket.

Traffic accidents have not decreased in the three intersections since the program was instituted, the Alexandria Times reported in March.
