Alexandria's Old Town Pool Temporarily Closed Amid Heat Wave
Amid an extreme heat warning, one of Alexandria's public pools is closed due to ongoing filtration issues.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — As real-feel temperatures could top 100 for several days this week, residents cannot visit one of Alexandria's public pools.
Old Town Pool is temporarily closed from Tuesday to Thursday, the city's Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities announced. The city said the main pool is facing ongoing filtration issues.
Staff are working on "manual, chemical, and equipment-based solutions to restore proper filtration and ensure water quality," according to the city. The repairs are aimed at keeping pool operations stable for the rest of the summer season.

The issue comes as the city is seeking to replace Old Town Pool through the capital budget. Due to aging infrastructure of the pool built in 1975, the city says maintaining consistent operations at Old Town Pool has been challenging. The city has allocated additional money to the project due to rising construction costs. The project is in the design phase, and construction is scheduled for fiscal year 2027.
"[Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities] is working diligently to rehabilitate and revive Old Town Pool," said Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities Director Hashim Taylor. "It has been a staple in the community for decades, and we want to ensure it remains a part of the fabric of our growing city."
