An application for a retail license to sell wine and beer was OK'd last month.

Founded in 2011 in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea in South Florida, the popular chain is on track to have more than 100 restaurants operating by the end of the year, according to a news release from the company this summer. The company has two stores open in Mexico with development underway in Panama, the United Kingdom and Kuwait.

The name BurgerFi is branded into every hamburger bun. What does BurgerFi mean? Founder David Manero realized that burgers and fries were the cornerstone of all restaurants, so its name sums up his desire to lead a “BurgerFication of the Nation," he told Coral Springs Talk four years ago after the opening of the first restaurants in Florida.

The new Old Town Alexandria location is holding job openings this week at the restaurant, the former location of longtime Alexandria haunt, Ireland's Own. The new burger restaurant is hiring cashiers, line cooks, prep cooks and dishwashers. Read more about the job openings here.
