The groups had extended an invitation to the mayoral candidates—incumbent Mayor Bill Euille and rival Andrew Macdonald, who is running as an independent. However, Euille was not available on the three dates offered by the groups. Macdonald accepted and said he was available on those dates.

Forum coordinator Diane Costello said via email to Patch that when the associations initially discussed hosting the forum, "we considered inclusion of Mayor Euille and Andrew Macdonald. But with such a large pool of candidates (12 Council + 2 Mayoral) we had opted not to proceed with a combined event." The groups had hoped to hold a second, mayoral debate.
