False Alarm: Suspicious Package in Carlyle

Police advised local residents to remain indoors while scene was investigated.

Alexandria fire a police crews responded to a suspicious package late Wednesday afternoon in the city’s Carlyle neighborhood that turned out to be a false alarm, according to an Alexandria Police Department spokesperson.

The package resembled a pipe bomb but turned out not to be an explosive device, police said.

Residents at the Carlyle Square Condominiums received an email from management saying police were requesting residents remain indoors.

John Carlyle and Ballenger streets as well as Holland Lane were blocked to traffic and pedestrians while authorities investigated the scene. The streets were to reopen as soon as the fire trucks exited the scene, according to police.
