Former Republican U.S. Sen. John Warner to Announce Support for Hillary Clinton

Former longtime Republican Senator will make his announcement with Clinton running mate U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Former longtime U.S. Sen. John Warner, a Republican, plans to announce his support for the Clinton-Kaine Democratic ticket Wednesday morning in Alexandria, the Clinton campaign announced late Tuesday night.

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's running mate, will join the five-term Republican Senator of Virginia, former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and former Secretary of the U.S. Navy, at the event.

Warner and Kaine will discuss "how Hillary Clinton is by far the strongest and most experienced candidate on a full range of national security issues, and that she has the knowledge, steadiness and temperament to be Commander in Chief," the campaign said in an announcement.

Warner served on the Senate Armed Services Committee for 30 years and for 20 of those years as either chairman or ranking member. As Senator, Warner worked with Hillary Clinton on the Armed Services Committee to "support the men and women of the military and their families," the campaign said.

At the event with Kaine and members of the defense community, Warner will signal for the first time in his career his intention to vote for a Democratic presidential ticket: Clinton-Kaine.

The leaders will highlight how, if elected, "Clinton and Kaine will provide service members with the respect, support and dedicated leadership they deserve and work with our allies around the world to keep American families safe," the campaign said.

Warner endorsed another Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner, in January 2014, in Mark Warner's re-election bid to the U.S. Senate.
