Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Hosts Lecture: George Washington, America’s Foremost Entrepreneur

The lecture will take place on Feb. 22 at Gadsby's and will discuss George Washington and his entrepreneur experiences.

From Gadsby’s Tavern Museum: The United States was conceived in business, founded on business, and operated as a business—all because of the greatest American businessman of any generation: George Washington. Using Washington’s extensive but often overlooked financial papers, Edward G. Lengel, Chief Historian of the White House Historical Association, chronicles the fascinating and inspiring story of how this self-educated man built the Mount Vernon estate into a vast, multilayered enterprise and prudently managed meager resources to win the war of independence. Lengel’s book, First Entrepreneur, will transform how Americans think about George Washington and how his success in commercial enterprise influenced and guided the emerging nation.

As America began as a nation during the late 18th century and emerged in the 19th century, Gadsby’s Tavern was the center of social and political life in Alexandria as well as the new Federal City of Washington. The tavern served as the premier gathering place for residents – including George Washington – and visitors to eat, drink, learn, and influence history. Tavern keepers John Wise and John Gadsby hosted balls, performances, and meetings, and their accommodations were known as the best by travelers near and far. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is located at 134 North Royal Street in the heart of Old Town Alexandria and is owned and operated by the City of Alexandria.
