Halloween Display Guide: Check Out These Spooky Houses Around NoVA, Fredericksburg

VIRGINIA — Throughout October, ordinary homes around Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg become the stomping grounds of ghosts, skeletons zombies and other creepy creatures.

One of the best traditions during the spooky season is visiting Halloween displays. We asked Northern Virginia Patch readers to share their Halloween yard displays for our 2024 guide.

Below are some of the photos we've received from Virginia residents. We will continue adding to our Halloween display guide through Halloween on Monday, Oct. 31.

40976 Maplehurst Dr, Aldie VA

Spooky Scary Maplehurst is a skeleton and haunted graveyard-themed yard. According to homeowner Bethany Banasik, decorations are dressed up as favorite characters, including Nightmare Before Christmas, Paw Patrol, Wednesday, Mario Brothers, Marvel, Disney and more. Interactive props add a spooky element with jump scares, fog and animatronics that sing and change colors. The display is kid-friendly and runs nightly from 6 p.m. to midnight through Oct. 31. Visitors are advised to stay out of the yard due to tripping hazards.

3001 Russell Road, Alexandria, VA

This home won the people's choice and second place for judges' choice in the Del Ray Halloween decorating contest last year as Pirates Revenge on Russell Road. This year, the theme is Plants v. Skeletons. Homeowner Colleen Gehrig says there is a 12-foot man-eating plant fighting a 12-foot skeleton and a custom-made animation. The display is open nightly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Nov. 2. Visitors are advised to not go onto the lawn.

8214 Orville St., Alexandria, VA

Maravi Manor is a creative haunt with oversized decorations and "fobbles," which are fog bubbles. Hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. each night.

3063 Cahill Lane, Dumfries, VA

Chris and Tasha's "The Spooky House on Cahill Lane" display is a synchronized light and music show. This year, the homeowners have added videos, many of which are custom made and edited to accompany the light show. Props have also been modified to work with the lights, and the music is played on an outdoor speaker. The show runs every night in October from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. All are welcome for trick or treating on Halloween night.

The homeowners say the display is at an end-unit townhouse limited parking. Visitors may park their car at the end of the street in front of the house or along Kirby Drive on the side.

6013 Wickenden St. Fredericksburg, VA

The annual Bartley Halloween display is open from 5 p.m. to midnight each night. The family will be dressed up and passing out candy on Halloween night. Visitors are advised to not go into the yard due to tripping hazards. The display is easily viewable from the cul-de-sac.

2001 Millgarden Drive, Fredericksburg, VA

The annual Hilliard display features various details to look at, from spiderwebs to ghosts and pumpkins.

6820 Violet Dr, Fredericksburg, VA

Halloween Spook Central is home to various animatronics, decorations and smoke effects. One of the highlights is SkeleThor. The dislay is available daily, but the animatronics are on during weekends. The homeowner will be dressed up and handing out candy on Halloween. Visitors are advised to view the display for a few minutes from the side.

610 Spring Street, Herndon, VA

The Historic Herndon Halloween House by Colleen Delawder and Bob Matthews is back and celebrating its 20th year. The theme is "Space Aliens." As a special treat, friends from The Beastro at Queens Row will join with a space and alien-related theme this year. The homeowners encourage others in Herndon to adopt the "Space Aliens" theme, whether it be green aliens, flying saucers, spaceships or Star Wars, E.T., Star Trek, Doctor Who and more.

"This Halloween, our goal is to put Herndon on the map as Virginia’s #1 Halloween Town!" the homeowners say. "Use what you already own or craft something using thrift store finds from The Closet of the Greater Herndon Area. Get creative. We’re excited to see what you come up with!"

To visit The Historic Herndon Halloween House, the homeowners encourage free parking in Herndon's Town Lot and not in the middle of the road, on the curb or other homes' driveways. The display is an outside-only attraction and is on a busy street, so visitors will need to walk there.

Hours are about 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly until at least Oct. 31. Some displays are more visible during the day and others are at night, so the homeowners encourage visiting before the sun goes down. Visitors are encourgaed to visit Town of Herndon restaurants in between visiting the display.

1419 Cuttermill Ct, Herndon, VA

Tanis Haunted Manor is ready to bring the thrills. According to homeowner Jenna Tanis "the Herndon Halloween House has been invaded by aliens and a few escaped! It is rumored that they are hiding amongst the decorations at the Tanis Haunted Manor. Can you spot they all?"

The display is open through Nov. 3. The home is on a cul-de-sac with limited parking. Visitors are asked to park on Jeff Ryan Drive and walk to the house, stay on the horseshoe shaped walkway and not touch the decorations.

1039 Jeff Ryan Dr, Herndon, VA

This X Files-themed display is named The Truth is Out There. It is open from Oct. 20 to Nov. 3. The homeowner advises visitors to drive slowly in the residential neighborhood and be aware of children.

Reston, VA

Reston resident Noelle Sharbaugh has a different kind of display to offer, and it's not outside. The High Heeled Hostess has launched, offering tablescape designing. Sharbaugh is an award-winning tablescape designer and wants to make home meals memorable for clients. Some of the digital product offerings are hosting guides, including the Ultimate Thanksgiving Playbook, tablescape design inspiration, recipes and menus, and holiday menu pack templates.

"My mission is to inspire people to celebrate life’s moments with style and confidence," said Sharbaugh. "From intimate dinners to lavish parties, I believe that every gathering
deserves a touch of glamor."

7658 Northern Oaks Ct. Springfield VA

Lyndsay and Nick Von Ehrenhelm like to do as much DIY as possible for their annual Halloween display. This year, they are offering "the concert you’ve been dying to see." Music to match the stage lights will be added on Halloween. Hours are 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31. Visitors are advised not to go into the display.

2100 Gunnell Farms Drive, Vienna, VA

This Taylor Swift-themed display takes a spooky twist as The scarEras Tour featuring appearances by Taylor’s Stiff and Travis Skelce as well as music. Homeowner Andy Herd says the display is open from Oct. 16 to Nov. 1.

524 Walker Street SW, Vienna, VA

This display titled "Chappellween" is a take on Chappell Roan and other pop stars. It is open and available to visit.

221 Nutley St NW, Vienna VA

This Halloween display opened on Oct. 17 and will remain open through Oct. 31. Visitors can find a haunting cemetery, ghosts, goblins, ghouls, witches and more. Flashing light effects will be part of the display, and fog will be added on Oct. 31. There is limited parking on the street, and drive-bys are permitted.

10140 Hillington Court, Vienna VA

Jen Dodge's display showcases several different scenes, including a pirate party, graveyard, spider den and dragon area. The display will be up through Nov. 2.
