Letter to the Editor: Alexandrians Should Commend the Democratic-Led City Council
Old Town resident Clarence Tong says the Democrats have done a good job, as seen by the city's strong financial strength.

To the Editor:
In a three Alexandria citizens, Gant Redmon, Kathleen Burns and Ginny Hines Parry stated: “It is very right for Alexandrians of all backgrounds to expect excellence in government, fiscal prudence, and good judgment.” I wholeheartedly agree and this is why it is important to commend the leadership of Mayor Bill Euille and the Democratic-led Alexandria City Council.
Following politics on the national stage, there is a tendency to get caught up in “wave” and “change” elections, and it’s easy to overlook great work when it is being done. I cannot imagine it being easy to steer Alexandria’s economy during the worst economic crisis in many of our lifetimes. Of course, difficult decisions need to be made, but under the guidance of Mayor Euille and the Democratic-led City Council, sustainable decisions that invest in Alexandria's future are being made.
The proof of Alexandria’s strong position and the effectiveness of its Democratic leadership can be seen in the recent comments from major bond agencies on the financial strength of our city. On July 9, two major bond rating agencies, S&P and Moody’s Investors Service, reaffirmed Alexandria’s fiscal health by giving it the top grade AAA and Aaa, citing the City’s strong diverse local economy, strong financial management, and low debt. As Alexandrians, we should be proud the City has such strong financials.
In addition, the three citizens also pointed to a “meager” victory for the “status quo” in the Democratic primary. This cannot be further from the truth. On June 12, Alexandria Democrats had the opportunity to vote in most diverse Democratic field in terms of race, gender, and professional experience in history. Two City Council debates drew over 800 Alexandrians in attendance promoting thoughtful discussions and the six strongest candidates in the race emerged that reflect the diversity of our City with many candidates not far behind. To me, this doesn’t sound like the “status quo” at all, but reflects the growing willingness for Democrats to stand up, make tough decisions and lead this City – our City – into the future.
