Police Charge Man with Murder in South Alfred Street Homicide

Melaku Abraha, 69, was brutally beaten during a street robbery March 28 and died a few days later of his injuries, police said.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Alexandria Police have charged a suspect in connection with the homicide of Melaku Abraha, who died on April 1 from injuries sustained during a robbery that occurred in the 200 block of South Alfred Street (see map below) on March 28, police announced Tuesday night.

George McGee, II, 22, of Capital Heights, Md., was charged Tuesday with Murder and Robbery. He is being held without bond in Prince George's County, according to police.

“As always, I am impressed by the hard work of our Alexandria Police detectives and their unwavering commitment to the victim and his family. Their dedication resulted in an arrest in less than two weeks." said Police Chief Earl Cook, in the announcement. "I would also like to thank the Prince George's County Police Department for their assistance in arresting the suspect."

WJLA reported that the Abraha was a grandfather who had visited an ATM when he was robbed and beaten.
