Police to Begin Issuing Fines to Red-Light Runners at Photo Enforcement Locations

Police will begin issuing fines for motorists failing to stop at red lights as captured on camera

The city's program to reduce red traffic light violations enters a new phase on Monday when police will begin issuing a $50 fine to each motorist who fails to stop at a red light at three locations monitored by cameras.

There was a 31-day warning period through July. During that warning period, a notice was issued to the vehicle’s registered owner for any violations but no fine was assessed.

The photo-enforcement cameras are located at three intersections:
• South Patrick Street and Franklin Street
• South Patrick Street and Gibbon Street
• Duke Street and South Walker Street

Cameras will operate 24 hours a day and capture images of every vehicle running the red lights at those intersections. Warning signs alerting drivers to the cameras have been installed prior to the warning period.

The Alexandria Police Department will review and approve each violation prior to being issued.
