Take a Look at a Different Kind of 'Moving Water' on the Waterfront

Artist Matthew Harwood's kinetic sculpture is on display through Dec. 3 in Oronoco Bay Park.

Residents and visitors may have recently been wowed by Moving Water, a piece of public art placed in in July.

The artwork, by Torpedo Factory resident artist Matthew Harwood, is part of a proposed 1.5 mile “Art Walk” incorporated into the city’s new Waterfront Small Area Plan.

The temporary installation is the first public artwork to debut as part of the Art Walk since approval of the plan.

The walk is intended to help unify Alexandria’s fragmented waterfront parks.

Art lovers and others need to act soon if they’d like to enjoy Harwood’s kinetic wind sculpture and park bench. The temporary exhibit is scheduled for removal Dec. 3.

The exhibit, according to Harwood, was “inspired by the flow of the Potomac River.” It includes 42 blue 10-foot high by ½-inch diameter fiberglass rods within the framework of an 8-foot red cedar wood bench. Artist Ihor Makara collaborated with Harwood on the piece.

Harwood authorized the Alexandria Commission for the Arts Alexandria Waterfront Public Art Proposal that was adopted by City Council as part of the waterfront plan.
