Tenants and Workers United, Others to Rally in Market Square

The groups plan to demand better housing, health care, education and workers' rights.

A group of union workers—Tenants and Workers United—along with other community members, plan to rally in Market Square Tuesday afternoon to demand better housing, healthcare, education and worker rights.

Under the banner "We Pay Taxes, We Invest in the City," local and regional organizations are expected to join  the rally, including the Iron Workers Union Local 201, Mount Jezreel Baptist Church, NAACP (Alexandria Branch #7043), Northern Virginia Labor Federation, Northern Virginia Urban League, NOVA Coalition, Services Employees International Union and Virginia New Majority.

The coalition hopes to make people aware of policy issues currently being debated in City Hall including the Beauregard Small Area Plan, amending the Alexandria taxi code so that cab drivers can move more easily from one company to another, increasing access to affordable healthcare, and the need to maintain high levels of education funding to support individual achievement plans, expand preschool opportunities and high achievement for all students.
