VIRGINIA — Summer is almost here, and it's time to start thinking about those plans to get away involving surf, sand, and sun.
With that in mind, Condé Nast Traveler has named its top 17 beach destinations on the East Coast. The town representing Virginia on the list is Chincoteague.
The new list includes everything from "charming, historic New England towns to tropical Southern getaways." The spots range from those perfect for family vacations to the shore to solo trips and group getaways.

Chincoteague made the cut with its famous wild horses, especially during the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, also known as the Pony Penning.
The publication notes that there are different theories for how the wild horses arrived on Chincoteague Island.

"Some say they are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked en route to Peru in the 17th century," Condé Nast Traveler shared. "Others claim they were left long ago by pirates. Still others say they are runaways from mainland farmers."
The luxury lifestyle and travel magazine also points to the Chincoteague's wildlife and undeveloped beaches along with hiking trails and a lighthouse.
Other Mid-Atlantic towns considered among the best on the East Coast include Cape May, New Jersey; Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; and Ocean City, Maryland. Nags Head, North Carolina, a popular destination for Virginia residents on the Outer Banks, made the list as well.
