ALEXANDRIA, VA — Memorial Day weekend serves as a kickoff to the summer season and a time to reflect on American military servicemembers who have died during their service.

Alexandria will have its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza & Vietnam Veterans Memorial in front of the Mount Vernon Rec Center (2701 Commonwealth Avenue) on Monday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The ceremony is held by the City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities with the Friends of Rocky Versace to honor fallen service members. The event pays tribute to Captain Humbert Roque "Rocky" Versace, an Alexandria resident and Vietnam War prisoner of war who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Along with Versace, it honors 68 other Alexandrians killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War and other fallen servicemembers.
