Virginia Museum of History & Culture

Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln both had a vision that the United States should live up to its founding ideal of human equality, but they had different strategies for achieving that goal. In this lecture, Lincoln Prize–winning historian Jonathan W. White will discuss his latest book, Measuring the Man: The Writings of Frederick Douglass on Abraham Lincoln, to explore how Douglass went from being one of Lincoln’s fiercest critics to one of his greatest admirers. Using previously undiscovered letters and speeches that have not been seen for 160 years, White will describe how these two great leaders joined forces in the fight to end slavery and bring about racial equality.
Dr. Jonathan W. White is professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University. He is the author or editor of twenty books and more than 100 articles, essays, and reviews about Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, slavery and emancipation, and the U.S. Constitution. His books include A House Built By Slaves: African American Visitors to the Lincoln White House; Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln; Midnight in America: Darkness, Sleep, and Dreams during the Civil War; and Measuring the Man: The Writings of Frederick Douglass on Abraham Lincoln.

As part of the VMHC’s 250th initiative, join the VMHC for a special in-person version of our popular Movie Mythbusting series. Guests will enjoy a live screening of the action-adventure blockbuster National Treasure (2004), starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, and Sean Bean, with live commentary from VMHC staff on what’s true, what’s not, and unique connections to the VMHC collection.
Tickets include after-hours access to the VMHC's signature VA250th exhibition, Give Me Liberty: Virginia &amp; The Forging of a Nation.
Wraps, sandwiches, salads, snacks (including popcorn!), and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be available for purchase from the museum café. 
Please note: • National Treasure is rated PG. • Due to the movie’s running time, we will be fast forwarding through certain sections to facilitate discussion. We suggest watching the movie on your own before attending the program. 
Schedule: • 5:00 – 6:00 – Participants are welcome to arrive early to explore the exhibition or grab a drink in the museum café prior to the event. • 6:00 – 8:00 – National Treasure (2004) screening + live commentary.

What is MHSS? MHSS is a Medicaid community-based program that helps adults with mental health challenges build the skills needed to live independently and maintain emotional and daily stability. Services are provided in the home and in the community by qualified professionals. MHSS supports individuals who need help with managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or PTSD; improving medication consistency; developing coping and emotional regulation skills; strengthening daily living skills such as cleaning, hygiene, nutrition, and routines; and building healthy social connections. MHSS also assists with organization, budgeting, employment readiness, and navigating community resources such as housing and benefits. A Step-Down Service MHSS is often used as a step-down after psychiatric hospitalization, Community Stabilization, CSB crisis services, residential programs, IOP/PHP, ED discharges, or case management referrals. Our team responds quickly to referrals from case managers, discharge planners, therapists, and community providers. Our Commitment We provide compassionate, person-centered, strengths-based care.
