Retire Your Worries at Avery Point

Linda and Roger Hultgren love all the free time they have now that they live at Avery Point

When Roger and Linda Hultgren were exploring their senior living options, they were looking for a community with plenty of activities and maintenance-free residences so they could pursue a vibrant, independent lifestyle in retirement.

"We didn't want our children to have to live with us or take care of us," says Linda. "Now, they won't have to."

That's because they found everything they wanted--and more--at Avery Point, an Erickson Senior Living community in Short Pump, Va.

Predictable costs

Avery Point's monthly service package bundles costs like utilities and a meal plan at on-site restaurants into one predictable bill, helping residents budget their hard-earned savings.

Roger and Linda appreciate that the package includes maintenance and repairs as well.

"We're free of all the home maintenance things that we did for 50 years," says Linda. "We don't shovel snow. We don't rake leaves. We don't mow the grass."

"It's pretty nice to have that," says Roger, noting that they've been happy to let the General Services team replace the filter in their HVAC system and the water filter in their refrigerator.

Expert staff members can also handle any appliance, plumbing, or electrical issues in a timely manner. If an appliance can't be fixed, it will be replaced at no additional cost.

Peace of mind

The couple's financial stability is further strengthened by Avery Point's industry-leading, 80% refundable entrance fee*--the heart of the community's pricing structure. The entrance fee, collected as part of the residency process, will go back to you or your beneficiaries if or when you leave the community.

"We consider this a gift for our two children," says Linda.

Residents also have a Home for Life.* No one ever expects to run out of money, but sometimes unforeseen issues arise that can quickly deplete your hard-earned savings and put you at risk.

At Avery Point, we've planned for life's uncertainties and are prepared to assist eligible residents who outlive their resources. No one will be asked to leave the community because of a genuine inability to pay.

A vibrant lifestyle

Without the stress and hassle of home maintenance, residents have more time to pursue their hobbies and interests--especially since access to the community's amenities is also included in the monthly service package.

"We are committed to offering an engaging lifestyle as well as exceptional value," says Finance Director Luke McKinley.

In addition to walking around the beautifully landscaped community, Roger and Linda visit the fitness center four times a week and play bridge with other couples.

Roger is on the Talents and Talks Committee, which brings outside entertainment in to perform shows, and the finance committee for the Resident Advisory Council.

"I'm also a member of the audio-visual club. That's a small group of us who help other clubs get set up with speakers and microphones, as well as hook up their computers to TVs to give presentations," he explains.

Linda leads the Avery Artists group and helps coordinate its many activities, including classes and artwork displays. She also helps with Vespers services and volunteers with the English as a Second Language program once a month.

More value

For the Hultgrens, the on-site medical center provides additional value and peace of mind.

Although residents are welcome to keep their existing primary care providers, many choose to visit the full-time physicians at the medical center. "After we had our initial one-hour appointment with Dr. Harding, we immediately made him our primary care doctor because he's excellent," says Linda. "He's very approachable and accurate."

She adds, "We're grateful that we have service right here. We don't have to go anywhere if we're sick, and we get all kinds of preventative care."

Residents who keep their current primary care providers can still visit the medical center for flu shots, tests, and screenings.

Fostering community

But Roger and Linda's favorite aspect of their new vibrant, independent lifestyle is dining with neighbors at Avery Point's restaurants, which serve delicious, made-to-order meals created by professional chefs.

"We joke that we have company for dinner every night, yet we don't shop, cook, or clean up," says Linda, with a laugh.

"I reserve a table for four up to a week in advance, and then we invite people to join us," says Roger. "We enjoy these connections with other people."
