VA's Most Iconic Sandwich Shop: Where Community 'Meats' Flavor

RICHMOND, VA — For some, a supreme sandwich shop may be where flavor, authenticity and creativity meat in the middle.

In Virginia, food-focused digital outlet Tasting Table deemed New York Deli the most iconic sandwich shop in the state.

The originator of the Sailor Sandwich, New York Deli was established in 1929, according to its online company biography.

The Sailor Sandwich was crafted in 1943 and features the following: pastrami, Swiss cheese, grilled knackwurst, spicy mustard and toasted rye bread.

New York Deli has experienced remodels and incorporates a neighborhood bar setting. The company stated it is still "a true Richmond gathering spot." The restaurant boasts what could be the "best Reuben on the planet," the biography stated.

Customer favorites include the crab cakes and the Polynesian chicken sandwich, Tasting Table reported.

Other menu items are various wraps, street tacos, chicken and waffles, the island bowl, orange salmon, fish and chips, the pupu platter, catfish bites, calamari, the NYD burger and homemade kimchi.

Happy hour is complete with edamame dumplings, the mini poke bowl, fried beef ravioli, fried nacho cheese ravioli, chicken lemongrass dumplings and shrimp or chicken kabobs.

Brunch items include soups and salads, the sunrise sandwich, avocado toast, crab croquettes, omelettes, cocktails, pretzel sticks and beer cheese and Rockaway nachos.

New York Deli is located at 2920 W. Cary St. in Richmond.

  • Chaps Pit Beef, Maryland
  • Famous 4th Street Delicatessen, Pennsylvania
  • Cam's Ham, West Virginia
