This Is Virginia's Best Grocery Store, Website Says

Do you agree with this analysis about Virginia's very best grocery store?

While Wegmans and Harris Teeter are the grocery store chains with a loyal customer base in northern Virginia — along with Walmart, which is the country's biggest seller of groceries — a website says neither chain is the favorite among Commonwealth consumers. A newly-released ranking says another store has more to offer, although it has only one location. Ellwood Thompson’s local market in Richmond has been identified as the best grocery store in North Carolina, The Daily Meals says.

The popular food news website, which published its list last week, said of Ellwood Thompson’s: "Easily the best reviewed store in Richmond, Ellwood Thompson’s handily sweeps the title in Virginia. Google reviewer Eric Asplund said, 'Ellwood Thompson's is a mainstay of Richmond Grocery Stores. It has seemingly been around forever. They sell high quality organic and health foods, as well as a wide selection of delicious prepared foods. This is a high end grocery store, but you will find that the prices are worth it'.”

The store is located in the heart of ever-eclectic Carytown at the corner of Elwood Avenue and Thompson Street, earning the market its name.

To come up with its list, The Daily Mail said it "scoured the Internet" for as much information as it could find, cross-referencing other best-of lists that have previously been written as well as reviews on Google, Yelp, Foursquare and Facebook.

"We also conducted informal polls of friends, family, and acquaintances in far-off states in search of the answer, weighing concerns and praise about price, quality of products, and customer service, as well as store cleanliness," according to the site.

A survey of customer loyalty released in May 2017 by Market Force said that America's favorite grocery store was a tie between Virginia favorite Wegmans and Florida-based Publix. Trader Joe's was a very close second. This is the second consecutive year that Wegmans has held the top spot in the annual study, while Publix, which ranked second for the past four years, moved up into a first-place tie with Wegmans, with each scoring 77 percent on Market Force's Customer Loyalty Index.

You can find Trader Joe's locations across Northern Virginia, including in Alexandria, Arlington, Bailey's Crossroads, Centreville, Fairfax, Reston, Springfield and more.

Wegmans has 10 stores in Virginia: Alexandria, Charlottesville, Dulles, Fairfax, Fredericksburg, Lake Manassas, Leesburg, Midlothian, Potomac, and Short Pump; it has no DC locations. There are only eight Publix stores in Virginia.
