Here are the top five stories today in Roanoke:
- Officials at The Roanoke City-Alleghany Health District received a report of an employee at Tuco’s Taqueria Garaje on Salem Avenue in Roanoke infected with Hepatitis A, and sent a team to conduct an inspection and interviews. The officials say the restaurant’s management team is fully cooperating, and has determined there is no significant risk of exposure to the public, since the employee did not directly handle food products. The RCAHD is offering the Hep A vaccine to anyone who ate at the restaurant from May 3 to May 15. (WDBJ)
- Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and actor Anthony Hamilton will be performing at the Berglund Center on July 21. Hamilton has sold over 50 million albums globally and been proclaimed a "national treasure" by the Los Angeles Times. Tickets go an sale Friday, May 27. The opening act is MC Light Foot. (Roanoker)
- The Botetourt County Sheriff's Department and the Virginia State Police are investigating after a man entered the Daleville Kroger Monday night with a bag he claimed held a bomb and demanded to be given money. The suspect was wearing a white bandana over his face, a light gray sweatshirt and black pants. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in what some witnesses said was a grey BMW sedan.(WFIR)
- Salem City will be offering it residents some relief from the pain at the gas pump in the form of a new personal property tax rebates that were approved by city council at its most recent meeting. Council members agreed unanimously that the relief will only apply to automobiles and not other kinds of personal property such as campers and motorcycles. (Roanoke Times)
- A new attraction that you can hear long before you can see it is opening Saturday at Explore Park in Roanoke County. The T-Rex Trail will feature 18 animatronic dinosaurs. Parks Administrator Eric Koehler and other employees are busy with the final preparations before the first crowds arrive. Advance tickets are on sale now. (WDBJ)
- MaKayla Russell, an 8-year-old hockey player for the Roanoke Lady Dawgs, began her fight against stage four cancer recently. "MaKayla Strong" is the motto being used in support of the little girl whose jubilant personality has seen her capture the hearts of many in the community who are now rallying to support her both on and off the ice.
