Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:

  1. Roanoke City Police were called to the scene of another shooting Saturday, this time on the 800 block of Ferdinand Avenue near Wiley Drive bridge in Southwest Roanoke. When they arrived they found a woman with what they believed to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound and transported her to Roanoke Memorial. No suspects were located at the scene, no arrests have been made, and police are actively investigating. (WDBJ, WSLS)
  2. Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department’s Emergency Services Division is advising motorists to be careful as there are several areas in the county dealing with flooding. For a list of roads to avoid see the attached links. Additionally, the remnants of Hurricane Ian (again, no relation, I swear) knocked electricity service out for nearly 20,000 customers in the western half of the state, with over 5,000 located in the Roanoke area. The National Weather Service said in a statement, "Showers will persist across the region through Sunday before the entire system exits the region Monday. A return to high pressure and drier conditions is expected Tuesday." (WFIR, Roanoke Times)
  3. The rain didn't dampen the mood too much at Southern Team subaru where they hosted the Roanoke Valley SPCA for a special animal adoption event yesterday. The dealership was taken over by puppies, kittens, and dogs (the cats couldn't be bothered, but did issue a statement through their representative saying if you want them you can come get them.) In addition to finding a new pet you could also find a discount on a new car through Subaru's Pet Adoption Incentive Program, a month-long awareness campaign to help find homes for vulnerable animals. Denise Hayes, Chief Executive Officer of the Roanoke Valley SPCA, "With shelters full locally and across the country, this initiative to get shelter pets into loving homes couldn’t come at a better time." (WSET)
  4. The Roanoker Magazine has announced their 4th Annual 40 Under 40 Awards that will honor young professionals working to make positive changes in the community. The deadline for nominees is October 9th and nominees must be 39 years or younger by March 1st 2023. The categories this year include Civics, Government, and Public Affairs, Financial and Insurance Services, Recreation and Outdoors, and fourteen others. (The Roanoker)
  5. The Cave Spring community and Cave Spring High School are mourning the unexpected passing of teacher and football Coach Chris Askew, who died last Monday. At the Cave spring versus William Byrd football game, the community took part in a moment of silence in his honor and throughout the game someone on the sidelines held a banner saying "This Game is for Askew." The game's announcer said over the loud speakers, "The Cave Spring community has been shocked and saddened by the unexpected passing of coach Chris Askew earlier this week. Please pray for the family, his friends, and the community as they grieve during this time of great loss. We ask that you join us for a moment of silence as we remember Chris Askew." (WDBJ)
