Here are the top three stories in Roanoke today:
- A 23-year-old hiker, Paul Classen of The Netherlands, who fell 50 feet from the top of McAfee's Knob Sunday morning has died. About 30 crew members from Roanoke County Fire and Rescue were joined by three police officers at the scene. Three all-terrain vehicles were used in the recovery of the fallen man. “I can’t exactly speak to the cause, we weren’t there when it happened, we just found him at the bottom. When our paramedics got there, they were reporting that he had a stable airway but was in serious condition,” said Brian Clingenpeel of Roanoke County Fire and Rescue. (WDBJ)
- Day of Action, traditionally held in June, is inviting volunteers from all over the Roanoke Valley to come and help clean up Booker T. Washington Park in Northwest Roanoke. The event is set for June 17 and will last from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Volunteers will meet for lunch afterwards. New, socially distant opportunities to keep partners, staff and volunteers healthy and safe have been created for those who are concerned, but still want to serve their community. (Roanoker)
- Botetourt County's 4-H Program reported to the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors recently that the program has over 1,000 students participating from 11 of the county's schools. The program meets at the Fincastle Community Center and includes clubs for livestock, horses, robotics and more. "The programs offered are all related in some way to SOL requirements and are part of the Character Counts program," said Tyler Painter, the 4-H extension agent. (Botetourt Bee)
