Here are the top three stories in Roanoke today:
- Residents of Southeast Roanoke got to take a dip in the Fallon Park Pool one last time over the weekend as PLAY Roanoke hosted a goodbye party for the soon to be replaced public pool Sunday afternoon. Roanoke City has plans to renovate the space into an aquatic center and is asking for the public's opinion via an online survey. "We’ve had lots of stories of grandparents coming in and saying that they came here as kids and now they brought their children and now their grandchildren. This has definitely been a staple in some peoples’ lives for years and years and it’s a bittersweet goodbye," said Lauren Woodson, Roanoke City's community recreation coordinator. (WDBJ)
- Carilion Clinic has received a $230,000 grant from United Health Care to help Fallon Park Elementary School get more mental health professionals. Thanks to the grant, 30 students will be able to work with one of three mental health professionals whose salaries will be covered and who will be on hand to give teachers a much needed extra hand. "The entire classroom will benefit by reducing those disruptions that really distract from learning and also take up a lot of teacher energy. Now the teachers can really focus on helping the students learn," said Heather Millar, Carilion's school based strategy consultant. (WHSV)
- City of Roanoke public libraries and the Roanoke Public Library Foundation have partnered up for the 2nd annual Roanoke Run for Refugees 5K. The marathon will take place on Friday, September 6 at Wasena Park and all proceeds will go to benefit the Refugee Resettlement Program through Commonwealth Catholic Charities. The event will be a timed 5K distance run or walk and a 1K race for children and all finishers will receive a medal. Participants who register before August 24 will receive a Roanoke Run for Refugees 5K commemorative t-shirt. "We are thankful to be a part of a caring and compassionate community who so openly welcomes refugees. The support of everyone involved in the Roanoke Run for Refugees will enable CCC to continue providing meaningful services like housing assistance, language and cultural education, school enrollment, employment assistance, and so much more,” said Marnie Mills, mission advancement associate at Commonwealth Catholic Charities.
