Here are the top five stories today in Roanoke:

  1. The third annual Hispanic Heritage Festival was recently announced by Local Colors, a Roanoke based nonprofit focused on ethnic diversity and multicultural understanding. The event will be held October 1 and will feature "The multifaceted cultural heritages of Latin America will be on display through a three-hour stage program of dance, music, storytelling and other features that honor the rich contributions of the Hispanic population," according to Local Colors website. (Local Colors)
  2. Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center has announced that its patients now have the option to find the cause of their vertigo, instead of treating the symptom. Doctors say vertigo is one of the most common complaints for adults, so RVSHC has partnered with the American Institute of Balance to offer testing using specially designed equipment. "It feels really good knowing that we can deepen our impact on our current clients, as well as reach a whole other base of clients in the region who don’t have an option within 90 miles and be an additional resource, so that we can really help remove barriers," said Executive Director Leeann Linkenhoker. (WDBJ)
  3. Roanoke City fire investigators have determined that a house fire on the 800 block of Marshall Avenue in Southwest Roanoke was accidental and caused by faulty electrical wiring. Fire and EMS crews were called to the house around 8:15 a.m. on July 8 and found heavy smoke and heat from a fire that had already burned out. Investigators estimate that the fire did approximately $70,000 in damages . (WDBJ)
  4. Downtown Roanoke Inc. has announced that it is instituting a new clear bag policy ahead of Elmwood Park's Budweiser Summer Series concerts. Bags larger than 5.5 by 8.5 inches will need to be clear and all bags will be checked upon entry to the park. "The policy was created to help ensure safety, accelerate entry into the park and improve the guest experience at concerts," according to a Facebook post. (WFXR)
