Here are the top five stories in Roanoke today:

  1. A historic building in Roanoke's West End neighborhood is being renovated for use by Local Environmental Agriculture Project (LEAP.) A press event is planned for June 13 at 1027 Patterson Avenue SW from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Officials from LEAP and Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be on hand to talk about the site plans, which will be available for viewing, and the $50,000 VDACS Grant partially responsible for making the project a reality. (Roanoker)
  2. Elmwood Park and the city of Roanoke have announced that the Henry Street Heritage Festival will return on September 17! The festival celebrates the center of Roanoke's Black community during segregation and supports the Harrison Museum of African American Culture at Center in the Square in downtown Roanoke. (WDBJ)
  3. Residents of The Gardens at Grandin apartment complex may be facing fines and legal action if they are unable to find new places to live before the property's scheduled renovation begins. Property owner's English Gardens notified residents in March that they would need to find new homes ahead of a larger scale construction project that would make inhabiting the property unsafe. Nearly half of the units are still occupied as the end of June deadline looms. (WSLS)
  4. A South Korean diplomat, Seijoong Kwon, visited the campus of Roanoke College in Salem on Wednesday morning to honor a century-old relationship. Kim Kyusik, a 1903 graduate of Roanoke College, played an important role in the modern history of Korea so leaders of the country and the college have kept in touch. "The college has such a long history with the Republic of Korea, most notably Kim Kyusik, but others as well. And so, we’re here in this part of the world, but we’re connected to the world and this is a good reminder," Mike Maxey, president of the college, said. (WDBJ)
  5. The last candidate for the Roanoke City Council special election has announced and the field is set. Peg McGuire, the former director of communications for the Virginia Museum of Transportation, will be running for the Republican Party and Luke Priddy, chief of staff for a sitting Roanoke area senator, will be running for the Democrat Party. Both will be vying for the council seat vacated by Robert Jeffrey when he was convicted of embezzlement earlier this year. The winner will complete the remaining two years of Jeffrey's term before running for reelection. (WDBJ)

Are you a Roanoke resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Roanoke Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
